Black Myth Wukong Gameplay Impressions

Ruyi Jingu Bang

Sun Wukong's magical black iron staff, also called the Ruyi Jingu Bang, would most likely be the central aspect of his combat repertoire. This staff can extend and change its size at the user's command. We don't know whether Sun Wukong will be able to obtain other weapons besides his staff, but this will be his main weapon throughout the game. Players would have access to a variety of staff techniques, including the ability to swap into different stances to highlight a particular combat style at any given time.

So far, we've only seen 3 stances, which are the Smash Form, Pillar Form, and Thrust Form. Players will have the ability to switch between these stances, allowing them to either focus on thrusting and poking enemies, or use it for wide-angle sweeps that target multiple enemies simultaneously. With the ability to switch between stances at will, players can seamlessly link together a series of combos.

Martial Arts Mastery

Sun Wukong is also known for his Martial Arts mastery and extraordinary combat prowess, we can hope to see him display some advanced martial arts skills and utilize his great speed and strength when engaging in combat. His combat style is both dynamic and versatile, allowing him to engage enemies with a blend of powerful strikes and acrobatic maneuvers.

As a skilled martial artist, Sun Wukong is capable of executing precise and agile movements, making him a formidable opponent whether he's engaging in one-on-one battles, or when combatting multiple enemies at once. His proficiency in martial arts is complemented by his exceptional staff-fighting techniques, where the Ruyi Jingu Bang serves as an extension of his combat capabilities. His ability to dodge in this game almost seems like it can be performed instantaneously, so players can run and dance around the battlefield to gain an advantage in certain combat scenarios.

Shapeshifting Abilities

Sun Wukong also possesses a unique ability to transform and shapeshift into various creatures. This ability provides players with extensive strategic possibilities during certain combat scenarios since they're able to transform almost immediately. Whether transforming into a nimble insect, a formidable beast, or something in between, each transformation comes with distinct skills and strategic benefits. Being able to adapt in certain combat encounters is key, and being able to switch between different forms at a moment's notice can turn the tide in combat.

In some of the gameplay footage, we were able to confirm at least 4 different transformations. There is this bug form that was one of the first transformations shown in the earlier trailers, setting the stage for some monologue and story exposition. There's no definite confirmation regarding the usability of this form in combat, as it seems impractical for dealing damage. However, it could serve as a means to introduce stealth mechanics into the game. Whether you're trying to infiltrate an enemy camp for a surprise attack or use it as a last-ditch effort to evade enemy strikes, this form may have different strategic uses, we'll have to wait and see.

We've also seen Sun Wukong take the form of some defeated enemies, although it is likely that not all types of defeated enemies can be utilized in this manner. There is footage where Sun Wukong transforms into a large gray feline. In this form, he opts for hand-to-hand combat, utilizing his fists or claws instead of his renowned black iron staff. This form also lets him deal massive AoE damage.

Another form that was able to make an appearance was an unnamed martial artist wielding a double-bladed staff with both ends ignited with flames. This particular form seems to inflict both physical and fire-based damage, and the flames persist on the enemy upon landing a successful hit.

The final transformation we were able to see was a creature with its entire upper body encased in rock and mud. This form appears to lack conventional attacks, relying solely on its legs for movement, but it can inflict damage by forcefully ramming into enemies.

Summoning Clones

Sun Wukong also has this unique ability to summon clones or duplicates of himself by plucking hairs from his own body. Each hair then transforms into an independent version of Sun Wukong, and this ability has a lot of practical combat applications. One of which involves creating a diversion, exploiting instances when the enemy or boss is preoccupied, using the clones to guide them in a certain direction, and then seizing the opportunity to land a successful strike.

This ability can also prove useful when facing multiple enemies at once, as the clones can take the damage for you, giving you time to recover and restore your health.
