Black Myth Wukong Combat

The combat in Black Myth: Wukong places a great emphasis on speed and relentless offense instead of slower, and calculated attacks like you'd see from Dark Souls. Due to the nature of Sun Wukong, he is known for his great speed and strength, so making the most of his agility will be crucial in attaining victory between combat encounters. And since you can dodge almost instantaneously, players would be able to make use of their fast reflexes and dodge at a moment's notice.

Dodging in Black Myth Wukong

In Black Myth: Wukong, dodging will be one of your main defensive options. Successful dodging often relies on well-timed and precise inputs but in this game, it's much more fluid as it can be performed instantaneously, and the speed at which you can execute this move seems almost limitless. However, you would still need to pay attention to your stamina bar as dodging consumes stamina, and you would need to manage this stamina to avoid exhaustion. If you keep dodging recklessly from enemy attacks, you'll run out of stamina making you vulnerable and open to enemy strikes. It's essential you take note of enemy attack patterns and dodge accordingly, understanding how different enemies telegraph their moves will help you dodge more accurately, and land a well-timed counterattack.

One of which involves creating a diversion for the enemy, lead them in a certain direction, and open them up for an attack. This can also be useful when overwhelmed by multiple enemies, as the clones can take the hits for you, giving you the chance to recover and replenish your HP.

Resting in Black Myth Wukong

As you progress in Black Myth: Wukong, you'll encounter stronger and tougher enemies, and with that, you'll have a tough time defeating them. When you find yourself backed up against a wall, you need to consider resting. Most of the time, you'll eventually run out of healing gourd to save you from sudden death, resting is a good option to step back and think about your next move.

You'll find these incense altars throughout different locations, these altars serve as a checkpoint, similar to Elden Ring's Sites of Grace. Once you see an altar, you can offer incense, then you'll see the option to rest, allowing you to fully restore your health, mana, status buffs or debuffs, and replenish your gourds. There is a downside of resting, all the enemies you've defeated will respawn in the exact location you found them. So it's wise to think about whether you're going for a rest or push through.

These stances add versatility in combat scenarios, in which players can chain together different combos effortlessly. Adapting to the situation is key, as you'll have to observe how enemies behave, and switch to a different stance that's best for the scenario at the right moment. At the moment, we've only seen Sun Wukong wield his iconic black iron staff, the Ruyi Jingu Bang, and we'll have to wait and see what other weapons he can add to his kit, but these stances would most likely only apply to his staff.

From some of the gameplay footage, we've seen 4 different transformations that Sun Wukong will be able to acquire throughout the game. One of which includes a bug form, initially presented in early trailers, setting the stage for monologue and story exposition. Although there's no confirmation regarding its combat utility, it appears suitable for stealth, providing opportunities to infiltrate camps and surprise enemies or potentially evade attacks as a last resort. Players would also be able to take the guise of some defeated enemies, although not all enemy forms may be at your disposal. In one footage, Sun Wukong transforms into a massive gray feline, opting for fists or claws instead of using the iconic black iron staff in combat. This form deals massive AoE damage to enemies within the vicinity.

There was also a form that featured an unnamed fiery martial artist, who wields a double-bladed staff with both ends set ablaze. This form seems to inflict both physical and fire-based damage, with the flames lingering on the enemy upon successful strikes. Another unique transformation that was showcased was a creature with its upper body covered in rock and mud. This form relies solely on its legs for movement, and it appears to lack any traditional attacks, but it can inflict damage by ramming itself onto enemies.
